Odds of Getting In

To get your start in this profishin―sorry, profession―there are two important things you need:

  • Water (typically the salty variety found in the ocean or the Great Lakes)
  • Another fisherman

No matter who you are, it's not a good idea to head out onto the open water without any experience in the matter, unless you go out there with someone who knows what they're doing. Many crews are totally open to taking on fresh meat, as long as you're willing to pull your weight. If you can prove you belong with the crew and take to the work like a shark drawn to blood, you've got a great chance of making a life at sea a reality.

And since this is a close crew, that might include some light hazing. Whatever they make you eat, just remember that puking into the ocean is a rite of passage in this job.
