There are more than 400 individual Whole Foods stores in the U.S. (source). Which means there are more than 400 "team leaders" running around, yelling at feckless deli workers to slice the organic, grass-fed beef faster and scolding the grocery stocker who couldn't answer a question from a customer. Really, how hard is it to remember whether spelt or barley has a larger carbon footprint?
The second your head starts to get too big, though, expect a thwack or two from the highest-ups—the people running the show from the boardroom. And that goes for managers at organic grocery chains other than Whole Foods, too. There's always a leadership team ahead of the manager at a grocery chain, so your power is pretty much limited to scheduling and allocating time off for your many worker minions. You're just one little cog in the machine.
