Speaker: Joey Gladstone

"Cut it out."

Cut… it… out.

Context

This famous line is spoken by Joey Gladstone, played by Dave Coulier on Full House.

There's the news reporter, Danny… the musician, Jesse… and the comedian… Joey. Yep, that's right. That guy relying on woodchuck noises is the funny one of the bunch.

And so, because he's a stand-up comic, Joey naturally has to have a hilarious catchphrase, right?

While saying the words, "Cut… it… out," Joey makes a cutting gesture with two fingers, then points (which represents "it," we guess), then hooks his thumb to indicate an… outwardly direction?

Hey, have mercy. It was the 80s and early 90s, and there was a lower bar for humor. Back then, Joey was the bee's knees. And besides, even if you didn't find what he was saying to be particularly funny, you could always just turn down the volume and laugh yourself silly looking at his mullet.

Where you've heard it

"Cut it out" is such a common phrase that it's tough to say what's been inspired by the recurring line from the television show and what's just making use of an old saying. But… could it be that the founder of this decorative wood cutout business was a big Full House fan? Maybe the owner of this paper design business was one, too? And hey, maybe even this book about Banksy's stencils  drew some inspiration from the oft-repeated witticism.

But more likely, you've just heard the line uttered by any number of people who were young, nerdy dads in the 90s and who still think it's hilarious to mimic Mr. Gladstone.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

The quote is far more silly than pretentious, and it doesn't include a single word over three letters long. That's pretty impressive.
