Speaker: Bart Simpson

Eat my shorts!

Context

This line is spoken by Bart Simpson, played by Nancy Cartwright, in the TV show The Simpsons (1989-present).

In the second episode (out of about 7,234 and counting), school suck-up Martin Prince tattles on Bart Simpson when he sees Bart spraying graffiti on the school walls.

When Martin get's in trouble for telling on Bart, the yellow boy wonder's snappy reply is "Eat my shorts."

And a catch phrase was born.

(P.S. Matt Groening may have gotten the phrase from The Breakfast Club.)

Where you've heard it

This catchphrase was on everything in the 90s: t-shirts, window signs, more t-shirts, and even an Eat My Shorts cereal in the UK in 2003.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Using outdated 90's catchphrases has its own drawbacks… but being perceived as pretentious isn't one of them.
