Speaker: Elton John

I never knew me a better time, and I guess I never will.

Context

This line was sung by Elton John in the song "Crocodile Rock," written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, from the album Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player (1972).

"Crocodile Rock" is one of the catchiest odes to days gone by ever written. Seriously, imagine Adele warbling something about one of her old boyfriends that you can also dance to. You can't do it. Nostalgia is usually kind of a downer.

But not "Crocodile Rock," where the speaker sings about the good times he used to have back when he was young and had a sweet Chevy, his own apartment, and a hot girlfriend named Suzie.

Anyway, says the speaker in the refrain, it was good times. Probably the best of times. Times now…eh, they're okay, but not "Crocodile Rock" level.

Where you've heard it

They'll play "Crocodile Rock" at your prom. And at your wedding. And pretty much anywhere you go where the DJ is trying to get people out on the floor. In fact, good luck avoiding this song.

  • Here's a version by The Parody People featuring Lego pieces singing about climate change. You know you've never had good times like back before global warming.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

"Crocodile Rock" is a really popular song, even more than 40 years after its release. Most people have heard it and danced to it. People will probably assume you're just trying to get a dance party started.
