Speaker: Narrator, The Rocky Horror Picture Show

"It's just a jump to the left... and a step to the right."

It's just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right. Put your hands on your hips, and bring your knees in tight. But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insa-a-a-a-ne. Let's do the time warp again!

Context

This famous line is part of the song "The Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, composed by Richard O'Brien, 1975.

Before the Macarena, the Chicken Dance, or the Cha-Cha-Slide, there was "The Time Warp," the addictive song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show that comes complete with instructions on how to do the accompanying goofy dance.

When Brad and Janet stumble into an Annual Transylvanian Convention, everyone there seems to know the words and the dance except for them. It's so wild (or so terrible, depending on your feelings about this camp classic) that poor Janet passes right out.

Where you've heard it

If you've ever been to a live show of Rocky Horror (like the teens in Perks of Being a Wallflower) or been at a costume party around Halloween, you've probably heard this dance floor staple.

Additional Notable References

  • There is a statue of Riff-Raff, O'Brien's Rocky Horror character, at a museum in New Zealand, complete with live stream where you can watch anyone who happens to be doing the time warp nearby.
  • Glee covered the entire Rocky Horror Picture Show, including this song, of course.
  • Here's the Doctor Who/Time Warp mash-up you always wanted.
  • You can even do the "Time Warp" in Zumba.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Anything that comes out of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is way too silly to be pretentious.
