Source: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour

Speaker: Tommy Smothers

Mom always liked you best.

Context

This line was first said in the first episode of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1967-1969), by Tommy Smothers (as himself).

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was a comedy show starring Tommy Smothers and Dick Smothers—playing themselves.

Their trademark was singing folk songs, with Tommy on guitar and Dick on bass. Usually, these songs would devolve into arguments between the two brothers, especially because Tommy was a bit slow, and Dick saw himself as superior. And, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued.

Whenever they'd argue, Tommy would always divert to the line, "Mom always liked you best" as his counterargument. It probably isn't the greatest come-back of all time, but hey, it always got the crowd going. Tommy was delightfully stupid, so whenever he said, "Mom always liked you best," he was always bound to get some sympathy—coupled with laughter—from his audience.

Where you've heard it

Well, if your mother actually liked you best, then maybe you've heard it from your annoying brother or sister.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Our guess is that no one really knows about The Smothers Brothers if they weren't around in the 60s, so you could probably get away with spitting this one out at your sibling to rattle them a bit. But you might sound a little like a crybaby. Wah, mom always liked you best. You've been warned.
