Speaker: Karen Smith

On Wednesdays, we wear pink.

Context

This line was spoken by Karen Smith (played by Amanda Seyfried) in Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters (2004).

The Plastics, who are the once and future queens of Northshore High, have more rules than Fight Club. And one of their most important maxims is that no color but pink is allowed on hump day.

Karen, who has ESPN, makes sure that this rule is clear when newcomer Cady is allowed to sit with them. Cady starts out as a spy for her friends Janis and Damian, trying to take down the Plastics' reign of terror, but ends up becoming their queen.

We don't blame pink for Cady becoming the leader of the Plastics, but conforming to the Wednesday uniform was her first small step to the dark side of being a "mean girl."

Where you've heard it

This quote is kind of the call sign of Mean Girls fans everywhere and has been emblazoned on pink T-shirts that should be worn on Wednesdays. We won't be like Regina George and judge if you wear yours during a Friday teen movie marathon though.

Three writers from the British website The Tab tried the Mean Girls "dress code" for a week and compiled their observations here.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

As long as you let us sit with you, this quote is grool.
