It's mentioned over and over that Paul is from "good stock", which basically means that his family is all right. He himself is more than all right. He makes pretty good friends with Grant and seems to truly care about Jefferson. He's the one who drives all the way out to the quarter to let Grant know when Jefferson is finally executed, and he's respectful of the people around him without getting too hung up on their race.
