The Bad Beginning Chapter 10 Summary

  • That night, after Klaus goes to bed, Violet stays up to make an invention.
  • She takes curtain rods and bends them into the shape of a large metal spider, then tears up some old clothes and attaches them together into a long rope—a makeshift grappling hook. Awesome.
  • Then Violet heads outside to try to hook out. After a few tries, it catches and she's able to crawl up the tower.
  • As she's crawling, she remembers a promise she made to her parents when Klaus was born. She is the oldest of the Baudelaire children and it's her responsibility to look after her younger siblings. Don't worry, Mom and Dad, Violet's totally on it.
  • When Violet reaches the top of the tower, she sees Sunny in her cage frantically trying to say something through the tape over her mouth.
  • Just then, Violet notices what her grappling hook has caught on: It's a hook… and more specifically, a hook belonging to the hook-handed man. And his other hook hand is coming right toward her. Oh no…
