Dark Water Chapter 26 Summary

  • At home, Pearl's mom fiddles around with the silk worms—evidently they need to be baked for a day to get the silk out.
  • Huh? Pearl is shocked. Basically the worms sit around eating all the time to prepare for becoming moths, only to be prematurely killed so we can get silk. Yikes.
  • Pearl's mom explains that they don't have great lives anyway: They have been bred specifically not to fly so that it's easier to get silk from them.
  • In other words, even if she lets them live, they will be moths without wings.
  • Pearl doesn't like the prospect of that either, so she changes the subject and informs her mom that her dad invited her to stay with him in his new condo.
  • Now it's time for her mom to be shocked. She's ticked that she and Pearl are living paycheck to paycheck in her brother's house while her ex is off buying more condos. How dare he.
  • She fumes, but since she doesn't want Pearl to hear her talk trash about her dad, she runs outside.
  • Pearl watches as her mom rants and raves for a while. She doesn't want to go after her mom because that would be like admitting that she heard every word of her mom's outburst, so instead Pearl curls up on the couch and pretends she's asleep. This way, when her mom gets back inside, she doesn't have to talk about it anymore.
