Feathers Part 3 / Chapter 11 Summary

  • That afternoon, Frannie and Sean sit on the couch, eat pretzels, and dance around to music. The music is so loud that she doesn't notice Grandma come in to yell at her for playing it so loud.
  • Grandma doesn't know actual sign language, but she does her own signs at Sean, which he seems to understand—as though they have a secret code language.
  • She asks them what's going on with the new baby business. Frannie tells her that it doesn't make any sense to her.
  • Frannie tells her grandma all about how there's a white kid in her school now, and how the other kids call him Jesus. Her grandma tells her not to pick on the boy just because he's white; after all, the world is changing now.
  • Frannie is annoyed, but Grandma goes on. She says that a lot of people will treat the boy poorly, and that Frannie needs to be the somebody else, the good person that he remembers.
  • Even though the light is fading outside, they all just sit in the dark without turning any lights on. They're deep in thought. And then they fall asleep.
