- The fellowship—particularly the hobbits—are distraught by Gandalf's death, but Aragorn says they must keep moving and make it to the woods before the hills are filled with orcs.
- In the woods they meet the elves of Lothlórien lead by Haldir. He knows of the evil Frodo carries and refuses to let them continue on until Aragorn persuades him.
