Homecoming Part 1, Chapter 7 Summary

  • The Tillermans wake up in the graveyard (spooky) and Dicey plans their path to Bridgeport. They have get back on Route 1. They have a little money and some food, so things aren't all bad. Sure…
  • The kids travel down Route 1 for days and days. Their money dwindles down, they're tired, and it's raining most of the time. But at least the younger kids have stopped arguing—now they just do whatever Dicey tells them, like tiny zombies.
  • When they get to New Haven, Connecticut, they spend their last bit of money on doughnuts. Dicey is determined to get across the city before dark because cities are dangerous after dark.
  • The kids can't make it, though, so Dicey decides they'll have to sleep in a park for the night. She tells the younger three to curl up under a bush to rest and she sits on a nearby bench to watch over them.
  • As Dicey sits, panic begins to set in. How much longer until they get to Bridgeport? Where will they get money? Why did she throw away that twenty dollars Sammy stole? Why did she even decide to do this? Dicey starts to weep. Let it out, girl.
  • As she cries on the bench in the rain, a young man comes and sits next to her. He offers to help, to give her food and a place to sleep.
  • Dicey is hesitant at first, but agrees because this guy—whose name is Windy—seems so kind. Plus, he's a college student at Yale, so he can't be too weird, right?
  • Windy takes the Tillermans to a nearby diner where they load up on cheeseburgers, fries, and pie—they haven't eaten since yesterday—and then he takes them back to his dorm room and introduces them to his roommate, Stewart, who offers to let the little kids sleep in his bunk bed.
  • After the younger three fall asleep, Windy and Stewart gently question Dicey. Even though Dicey is a little leery at first, she eventually opens up to these two good Samaritans about their journey and how they've been walking for weeks on their own trying to get to Bridgeport. We're tired just thinking about it.
  • Windy and Stewart don't press Dicey to give them any more details and she falls in a deep sleep on the sofa in the living room of the dorm.
