Gospel of John Love Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter:Verse)

Quote #7

"If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world—therefore the world hates you." (NRSV 15:18-19)

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. (KJV 15:18-19)

Haters gonna hate, says DJ Jesus. The world isn't ready for all the love, light, and goodness that the disciples are going to bring its way. You know what that means: things are going to be rough for the next few hundred years.

Quote #8

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." (NRSV 21:15)

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. (KJV 21:15)

Jesus is putting some major trust in Peter here—and this is a guy who denied knowing Jesus just a few chapters earlier. What are we supposed to learn from Peter's character? What's his role in the story? Check out his "Figure Analysis" for more discussion.
