Character Analysis

We never actually get to meet Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern's dad, but we hear about him in bits and pieces from Delphine. Right away, we like him. Not only does he give the girls some cash for Disneyland (score), he cares about his daughters rekindling their relationship with their mom. It's clear that Pa takes really good care of the girls.

In case we had any doubts, Delphine tells her little sisters on the plane: "You know how Papa is […] No way he'd put us on a plane if it were dangerous" (1.6). Clearly Pa is someone his daughters associate with safety, someone they trust to keep their best interests in mind always. This stands in stark contrast with Cecile's aloof nature, and throughout the book it's nice to know the girls have someone waiting to take good care of them when they get back home.
