Character Analysis

Delphine's middle sister enjoys playing pranks, running, and yelling with little Fern. The two of them are attached at the hip—well, except when Vonetta colors all over Fern's doll just to be mean. We'll give Vonetta the benefit of the doubt since she's just a kid and Fern's her sister. Pesky behavior just goes with the sibling turf. Still, we see how immature and petty Vonetta can be (mostly due to her age) since Delphine is so much more mature than her.

Vonetta's also sensitive. She gets hurt easily because she opens herself up to people all the time—as Delphine explains, "Vonetta's feelings got hurt because she was always sticking herself onstage for everyone to see her" (4.19). In other words, Vonetta isn't nearly so jaded as Delphine; she's still innocent enough to share herself freely with the world. Yes, this means her feelings get hurt, but on the upside, it also means she's still a kid at heart.
