Painter Street
- At the farmhouse, the Op and Dinah find a boy who is willing to drive them back into town.
- The Op gets Lew Yard's address from Dinah. He finds Dick staking out Yard's house and tells Dick to watch Willsson's home instead to see if Max is hiding there.
- A little later, the Op then heads over to City Hall where he finds out from Noonan that Lew Yard has just been shot coming out of his house.
- Noonan expresses his distaste for all the killing that has been happening lately.
- At the Silver Arrow last night, three men died: the Johnson brothers, Blackie Whalen and Put Collings, as well as a guerrilla named Dutch Jake Wahl, all three Lew Yard's men.
- The Op tells Noonan that Whisper is hiding out at the Willssons' place, and wants Noonan to organize a meeting with everyone there that night at 9 p.m.
