The Ice Pick
- The Op is questioned by policeman McGraw about Dinah's murder.
- He gives the alibi provided by Reno, saying that he had stayed at the Tanner House all night. The Op thinks that Whisper killed Dinah for ratting out on him.
- Mickey later tells the Op that Dan Rolff (who was being treated at the hospital for a fractured skull) had sneaked out of the hospital and his whereabouts were now unknown.
- The Op receives a phone call from a lawyer named Charles Proctor Dawn, who insists on setting up a meeting.
- Someone knocks on the Op's door, and a gaudily dressed man named Ted Wright comes in. He's a friend of Whisper's and tells the Op that he'll kill Whisper if the price is right.
- The Op questions him and finally gets Ted to explain that Dan and Whisper had both shot each other.
- Dan is now dead. And Whisper is wounded and hiding out in Redman's warehouse on Porter Street.
- Ted was hoping to score some money by pretending that he'd shot Whisper.
- Next, the Op goes to Charles Dawn's office. Charles says that the Op will need legal representation because he's facing a charge of murder. They arrange to meet the next morning at ten.
