Story of a Girl Chapter 7 Summary

  • The next morning, Deanna's mom drives Darren to Safeway. Stacy's left the car there with a note saying she's sorry and not to worry about her—but she doesn't say where she went.
  • Dad's furious. Mom's sure Stacy will come home soon. Darren's crying.
  • Darren makes some calls to Stacy's family, but nobody's seen her.
  • Deanna's worried: this throws a major kink in her plans to live with Darren and Stacy.
  • In the meantime the family is left to care for April, which Deanna realizes is exhausting—April's seriously fussy.
  • Until, that is, Deanna's dad holds her and she calms down.
  • Major Deanna nostalgia trip: she thinks about how it used to be with her dad, and briefly entertains the thought of asking him if they can get back to the way they were.
  • Then she realizes she has to stop thinking that way, because it will never happen, and she doesn't want to get hurt again.
  • Darren has left the room, but when he comes back, Dad hands April over and walks away.
  • Darren asks Deanna if she remembers how it was the previous summer, when they partied all the time. Deanna doesn't remember anything particularly fun, and she says so.
  • She also tells Darren that Stacy was mad about his reaction to her hair dye, which totally baffles Darren.
  • They talk about how Stacy has to come back.
  • Later Deanna thinks that maybe Stacy has gone to the youth hostel at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse, where Stacy and Darren went one time. Darren decides he's going to drive two hours to go look.
  • Deanna wants to go along, but Darren says no.
  • Deanna blurts out that she wants them all to move out together. Darren says that's a bad idea since things are so shaky between him and Stacy, and then he tells Deanna she's going to have to find her own way out—which, needless to say, hurts her feelings big time.
  • She walks away and goes upstairs without looking back.
