The Lost Weekend Scene 7 Summary

  • Harry and Joe's is a fancy piano bar. Don asks for a check after a single drink, but realizes that he doesn't have enough money to pay for it.
  • He asks the waiter for another drink and eyes the couple canoodling next to him. The woman's purse is precariously exposed.
  • Slowly, Don grabs the purse and slips it under his jacket. The woman doesn't notice, so Don heads to the bathroom.
  • There, Don asks the bathroom attendant (that was a thing) to shine his shoes while he slips the woman's money out of her purse.
  • When he returns, however, he finds the couple gone and a large group of people standing near his table. Oh man—they know what happened.
  • He returns the money and the purse, so the woman tells her man not to call the cops. The piano player sings a ditty called "Someone Stole a Purse" while Don is being thrown out.
  • Dejected, Don stumbles home and looks at the destruction he caused earlier that day in his booze-fiend frenzy. He collapses onto his bed.
  • When he looks up at the ceiling, he sees an odd shadow being cast by the light fixture—a certain bottle-shaped shadow. Eureka!
  • Don climbs a chair to acquire his hidden treasure and promptly begins chugging whiskey straight from the bottle. Ew.
