- By cocktail hour, Bev hasn't returned from her shopping trip yet and Joe is impatient and annoyed.
- Bev finally walks in carrying an ugly vase shaped as a pineapple. She says that it's a gift for Grandma Glad, and explains that she's late because she got her hair done and went shopping at some places that Mrs. Grayson recommended.
- Joe tells them that he has big news—he and Mr. Grayson are thinking of going into business together to buy the hotel. Evie is excited, but Bev doesn't seem to trust his decisions, which upsets Joe.
- He finally agrees to go downstairs for dinner after she apologizes. Joe tells them both to stay away from Peter Coleridge, even though Evie knows that she won't be able to follow that rule.
