What I Saw and How I Lied Chapter 3 Summary

  • When Evie gets home, she feels weird about what Margie did—even though she knows that she was just being a good and loyal best friend. (Hey, Evie—being racist and mean isn't the same as being a good and loyal best friend… just so you know.)
  • Her mother comes in. Evie's mom is absolutely gorgeous and everyone always stops to stare at her. Evie tells her that she wants to start wearing make-up—specifically lipstick—and her mother tells her that she shouldn't be in such a hurry to grow up.
  • After all, Evie's mom got pregnant with Evie when she was seventeen. Evie doesn't even know her father—she calls her stepfather, Joe, her dad.
  • They also live with Joe's mother, Grandma Glad. Her real name is Gladys, but Joe told them to call her that—maybe to make her sound more friendly and sweet. In reality, she's a mean old viper and has a bone to pick with Evie's mom.
