What I Saw and How I Lied Chapter 23 Summary

  • Evie is hanging out by the pool by herself when Wally comes up and tells her that a big storm is coming. She doesn't want to see him, but she recognizes the lust in his eyes—maybe she needs more practice with men.
  • When Wally asks her if she wants to go for a walk down the beach, she agrees. She asks him what will happen if a hurricane actually hits, and he says they'll be evacuated and sent over to West Palm.
  • Wally kisses her, and she kisses him back. He puts a hand on her chest and squeezes, and then takes his pants off. As he presses against her, she pushes him off and tries to get up—but he grabs her skirt and it rips.
  • Evie starts to cry as they walk back, and when they get to the hotel they run into Mr. Forney—who stops Wally and says that he has to talk to him.
  • Evie's parents and Peter don't come back by 3:00PM, or even by 4:00PM. The wind and the rain has started up, and Evie's getting worried—a hurricane is definitely blowing their way.
  • By the time she goes to bed, they're still not home and she lies awake, unable to sleep. Tomorrow morning they're evacuating Palm Beach.
