- After her parents leave with the police, Evie just sits with her grief, unable to cry for him. How is she going to go on now that her first love is dead?
- Her parents come back and tell her that they all need to get their story straight when they talk to the police. Specifically, they need to tell the police that they didn't know Peter very well, and that Joe didn't know him before they came to Palm Beach.
- They also want her to say that it was Peter's idea to go out on the boat. Evie realizes that her parents want her to lie to the police so that they don't get pinned for Peter's death—they don't want the police to think that they murdered him.
