It is difficult to make a career in retail nurseries only because the work is not very lucrative. Only those who own nurseries can earn a respectable income. Anyone else who can survive on minimal pay typically hangs on as long as he or she wants to. Retail nurseries do not have much turnover of employees, since most people who take those sorts of jobs typically have no reason to leave them. (Unless they develop a sudden and intense hatred of nature. Unlikely.) Nursery staff are innately complaisant and easy to get along with, so there is rarely any reason for anyone to quit or get terminated. However, layoffs can threaten when slow business cuts into the revenue needed to keep everyone paid.
