Achieve tenure, and you’re almost a lock. Until you get to that point though, you are vulnerable and susceptible to termination due to poor performance, layoffs or disciplinary problems. So do whatever you can to hang on until you get yourself tenure, and then you can perform poorly and display a lack of respect toward your students and superiors to your heart’s content.
