Oakland University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Club sports. We never give up on our dreams.

  • Suicide prevention is a big campaign here and is the reason you'll see Frisbees all over campus on a random Tuesday.

  • The OU Career Fair is awesome and is highly recommended to anyone looking to make a connection outside of school. That would be everyone.

  • Research. From automotive technology to eyeballs, I've got someone looking for answers and innovations.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A dependable car is the number one thing you need. I can't emphasize this enough. Trust me, you'll want to explore more than the halls and library.

  2. Your classmates' emails will be vital when you're sitting at home deciding whether that class is worth the drive.

  3. Some solid shoes for the trails you'll find yourself getting lost on, on the weekends. Just follow the signs if you do get disoriented.

  4. A winter jacket for the cold months Michigan is known for.

  5. A couple of quarters for the vending machines. Despite our many technological advances, many of the snack dispensers only accept real money instead of the fake money that's on your debit card.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • For some reason parking is a constant problem here on campus. With a recent addition of a parking garage, you'd think you could find a spot right?

  • Tuition is relatively cheaper than the other big name schools in Michigan and many students are choosing my affordability to limit that looming debt.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

If I'm not over preparing for a Monday class, then I'm going off campus for a walk downtown, and because I totally deserve it, a drink at Rochester Mills Brewing Company.

If the bars are too loud and I'm feeling cozy, I'll go to the Emagine Theatre about ten minutes from the campus. They have reclining seats with armrests that could seat a whole extra person. They also have a full bar and pizza that can be delivered to you while you wait for the movie to start.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The library is where we get them good grades and stuff ya know? With four floors and ranging levels of voice audibleness, there is a place for everyone. Except when there isn't enough chairs.

  • The OC cafeteria houses your favorites such as Subway and Panda Express.

  • If the dining hall isn't doing it for your taste buds then T.G.I. Friday's is a popular spot across the street. Forewarning: Happy hour may sound more enjoyable than Medieval Literature.

  • The Emagine Theatre for pizza and movies.

Quirks:

  • I love using Blue Book testing booklets for some reason. I'm pretty sure it's because of the color.

  • I have the only Chick-fil-A location in Michigan. I won't blame you if you attend me based solely upon that fact.

Famous Alumni:

  • Steven Blackwood of Days of Our Lives

  • Karen Newman. Singer for the Detroit Red Wings

  • Don Kirkwood, a professional baseball player

  • Curtis Armstrong, an actor who was in Revenge of the Nerds

  • Maximiliano Larrquette, the designer of the Chevy Volt
