About Me

Intro

Have you ever seen Leave it to Beaver? Well, if you took the "gosh golly gee whiz" wholesomeness of that show and added two steeples, a top-notch nursing program, a Bloomberg lab, and a host of quirky elementary school teachers, you'd have me. Gosh golly gee whiz.

I value tradition and southern hospitality here in "the bubble," but I'm not afraid to leave campus. I like to say that I sit in the shade of trees that I didn't plant, and while it's nice and comfy under those trees,

I'm not about to let the circle of giving stop with me. I'm really big on community service: every year, I host "Samford Gives Back," where around 1,000 of my students volunteer their day to over thirty different sites across Birmingham.

I believe that great communities start at home, which is why I put lots of effort into making everyone, no matter what year they're in, feel welcome. Whether it be during Freshmen Connections Weekend or Welcome Back Week, Sorority and Fraternity Recruitment or Spring Fling, I'm all about making connections.

I especially love a good romantic connection. #RingBySpring starts the minute you step on campus. However, all you ladies had better bring your A game: you outnumber the guys three to one.

Spike the Bulldog

Hometown

I'm technically located in Homewood, but I'm only minutes away from Birmingham, and I consider the Ham to be my home.

Body Type

Small, basic, with a granola twist. My campus is a cozy 200 acres. I'm really into the Georgian-Colonial style of architecture; I think it makes me look classy and dignified. Others agree—I've been called one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.

All 5,000 of my students love to gather together around a roaring fire decked out in Patagonia vests, some pearls, and Chacos. Is it possible to go to a tailgate in the afternoon and then a singer-songwriter acoustic house party at night?

The answer is always yes, but make sure you bring your pour over. I prefer coffee to booze any day—in fact, my campus is totally dry, so if you're hoping for a little liquid courage on game days, you'll have to go off-campus and find the nearest fraternity house.

Current Living Situation

Unless you live in the new West Village Apartments, you'll probably find yourself in a small but quaint room where you'll prize your dehumidifier just as much as the girl who bakes cookies for the entire building. How she can stand to bake in this weather, I'll never know.

However, if you're a freshman, get ready for the red carpet. Not only do you get a primo central campus location for your dorm, but the upperclassmen will actually move you into your dorm in the 105 degree heat with eighty percent humidity (the heat may be annoying, but the humidity will make you cry).

It's my little way of saying, "Welcome. I hope you packed a dehumidifier."

A little tip for incoming freshmen: the sidewalk between the freshmen guys' and girls' dorms is a great place to start your ring by spring mission. Just don't get too cozy—pretty much every building on campus overlooks "lovers' lane."

Relationship Status

Three guesses about who I don't like, and the first two don't count. That's right, it's Stanford. People are always getting us mixed up. It's Sam, not Stan.

I'm also not too fond of Furman or Baylor. They think they're so special. I'm the ultimate nice guy, so I'll give 'em that—they're good schools. I think I'm better, though.

Religion

Would you like to go to church on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday? All of them? Perfect. I'm as Christian as it gets; the local churches and my Christian-affiliated student organizations are on campus daily. If you need more proof of my affiliation, just check out my motto: "For God, For Learning, Forever."

Politics

I'm a big fan of red, and I'm not just talking about the Crimson Tide (Roooooll Tide!). However, if you lean more towards the blue side of the spectrum, you're sure to find likeminded individuals in the Humanities and Honors programs.

You should apply to me if...

you're a driven individual who cares a lot about caring.
