Brokeback Mountain has frank depictions of sex, including brief nudity of people from both sexes, although for what was known as the "gay cowboy" movie, it has more scenes of heterosexual sex than any man-on-man action.

The movie also has one quick scene of horrific violence. Ennis, as a child, sees the mutilated corpse of an older gay cowboy. He later imagines Jack being beaten to death.
