What’s Up With the Title?

Crazy Rich Asians isn't a super complicated title to unpack, particularly since it directly describes the subject matter of the book.

The phrase itself is muttered by none other than Rachel Chu as she breaks up with, who she had thought, was the love of her life, Nick Young. She's fed up. She wants out.

"I've had enough of being around all these crazy rich Asians, all these people whose lives revolve around making money, spending money, flaunting money, comparing money, hiding money, controlling others with money, and ruining their lives over money. And if I marry you, there will be no escaping it, even if we live on the other side of the world" (3.15.148).

But in this utterance, we feel Rachel. This book is heavy with conniving, out-of-line behavior from these family members, and Rachel says what we're all thinking. Part of the beauty of it, too, is that we don't really know what the crazy refers to: are they crazy and rich Asians, or just crazy-rich Asians?

We think Kwan wanted to leave that decision up to you.
