Shang Su Yi's family, with all its wealth, lineage, and influence, seems to function as a culture all of its own. Shang Su Yi, and her parents before her, have created traditions and customs that preserve the sanctity of their money and their bloodline. The archaic customs provide an interesting contrast, as Nick later points out, to the modern and progressive landscape of Singapore.
