The Song of the Shot

  • This established, the crème de la crème of the Gun Club gathers to discuss the technical end of their endeavor. There are three things on the agenda: "the cannon, the projectile, and the powder" (7.2).
  • First, they decide that the projectile should be about nine-feet wide. Additionally, they'll need to build a telescope on top of a mountain in order to track its progress.
  • There's just one problem: A shot that big will be way too heavy to reach outer space. Barbicane suggests using lightweight aluminum to counteract this.
