Marguerite

Character Analysis

Shorty's twin and other half (literally, in voodoo) is one of those people that everybody notices. Listen to the way Shorty describes her:

You didn't have any choice but to follow Marguerite. I don't know if I can really explain that without you seeing her. It was like… It was like her personality went in front of her, bright, like a reverse shadow. You felt the force of her from meters away. (1.183)

Marguerite sounds like a rock star, minus the rock. She shines everywhere she goes, and it's clear that everybody adores her. It's important that Shorty describes Marguerite as a reverse shadow because she doesn't belong in the darkness of their life in the Site. She's the opposite of what they experience.

In many ways, it's fitting (and heartbreaking) that Marguerite dies so young because it's clear that she's too principled and kind to live in the drug-fueled, gang-filled world of the Site. Plus, only the good die young.
