Lucky Jim Chapter 18 Summary

  • Jim's back in Welch's office. Welch is very happy with the research Jim's done, which is good. But just when Jim's about to get away, Welch asks him to come over to chez Welch that night. Jim's still looking for an opportunity to work on his lecture. But again, the guy can't say no.
  • The next thing we know, Jim's in Welch's car, and on his way to the Welch house.
  • The whole time, he has to listen and smile to whatever Professor Welch is talking about while fearing Welch is going to get them both killed with his terrible driving.
  • When they pull into the driveway, Welch doesn't leave Jim much room to get out, and Jim tears his pants as he slides between the car and a wall.
  • They're the only pants he has, so he's going to need to get them sewn before his lecture the following night.
  • We're getting an increasingly bad feeling about this lecture.
  • When they finally get inside the house, Professor Welch remembers that he promised to go to the theatre with the Goldsmiths that night; so there won't be any dinner for Jim.
  • Basically, Welch has just wasted Jim's time (what else is new?).
  • But it gets worse. Before Jim can turn to leave, both Mrs. Welch and Bertrand confront him angrily.
  • Mrs. Welch demands to know what Jim did to her bed sheets, which Jim has completely forgotten about at this point.
  • He's so caught off-guard that he confesses to ruining the sheets, although he leaves out the part of exactly how they got ruined.
  • He offers to pay for them, and miraculously gets Mrs. Welch to leave it at that.
  • But wait; there's more.
  • Now Mrs. Welch accuses Jim of pretending to be a newspaper reporter and calling her about Bertrand.
  • This is also true, but there's no way Jim's going to admit to that one.
  • He totally denies it, successfully. Bertrand already suspects that another one of his friends from London was behind the prank call.
  • There's only one question left now: Bertrand wants to know what Jim thought he was doing when he convinced Christine to leave the Summer Ball with him.
  • As he asks this, Christine and Margaret come into the room. Jim plays dumb and says he wasn't up to anything.
  • Bertrand warns him not to try anything with Christine in the future. He seems to think that he can get Jim fired, but Jim thinks it's an empty threat.
  • Jim says that it's up to Christine, and not Bertrand, to decide whether she wants to see any more of him (Jim).
  • Bertrand loses his temper and tells Jim to get out of the house.
  • Christine leads Bertrand away by the arm, leaving Jim alone with Margaret.
  • Jim tells Margaret that he feels like he's stuck with her (Margaret), which is his way of saying they should get back together (but were they ever going out?).
  • It's all confusing at this point. He tells Margaret that he won't pursue Christine any more.
  • Jim invites her to go out to a movie with him, and she accepts.
  • It's weird, but both of them seem to accept that they're stuck with one another, whether they're in love or not.
  • Before he leaves, Jim has a moment alone with Christine. He mentions their date, as if to say, "Don't worry about it."
  • But before he can say anything, Christine assures him that she'll be at their meeting place.
  • Bertrand comes back into the room, and soon after Jim leaves with Margaret for the movies.
