Valancourt Timeline and Summary

  • Valancourt meets up with Emily and St. Aubert on their travels and cheerfully joins them. What a guy.
  • When the St. Auberts leave Valancourt, he tries to catch up with them… and ends up getting shot in the arm by a paranoid St. Aubert.
  • After Valancourt rests up for a bit, he keeps traveling with Em and her dad. When the group spots a poor shepherd, Valancourt gives him all the money he has on him. This is one of those "Oh, honey…" moments.
  • Valancourt parts with Em and her dad, but not before promising to visit La Vallée one day.
  • That day comes pretty quickly, since Valancourt swings by soon after St. Aubert's death.
  • He confesses his love to Em, who timidly says she loves him back. Good thing, 'cause that would have been awkward.
  • Madame Cheron catches the pair flirting in the garden and puts the kibosh on that relationship right away.
  • Valancourt follows Em to Tholouse to continue pursuing her. He just won't let it go.
  • He catches a break when Madame Cheron hears a (mistaken) rumor that he's filthy rich. She lets Em and Valancourt get engaged. Whoopee!
  • But Montoni splits the impending marriage up when he announces he'll be taking the whole family to Italy… minus Valancourt.
  • Valancourt tries to convince Em to elope, but she's not down with that kind of thing.
  • When Em is away, Valancourt will play… at cards, that is. He gets really into gambling and gets thrown into a Parisian jail for his debts.
  • When he gets out and hears Em's back in town, he pays her a visit.
  • She's thrilled to see him until the Count de Villeforte tells her about his gambling problem. Oops.
  • Poor Valancourt gets shot when the gardener at Tholouse thinks he's a robber. He's just lurking in the bushes, trying to catch a glimpse of Em… not weird at all.
  • Valancourt has been supporting Theresa, Em's old maid, this whole time. See, he has a golden heart!
  • He walks into Theresa's cottage when everyone thinks he's dead. Em still loves him, but she's trying pretty hard to conceal it.
  • Monsieur Bonnac shows up at Chateau-de-Blanc and tells everyone how Valancourt bailed him out of jail with all of his money. Another reason to keep the guy around.
  • Em forgives Valancourt and takes him back, since she's rich now. It's a happy ending for this love-stricken puppy dog.
