Young St. Foix is just about as perfect as they come for husband material, given his sweet connections and privileged lifestyle. His dad, the Baron St. Foix, plays a large part in prepping his son to marry the likes of Blanche de Villeforte. The engagement and marriage come off with nary a problem. What's the deal?
Well, Blanche and St. Foix serve to contrast and highlight all the difficulties experienced by Em and Valancourt. The former two are carefully guided through life in the lap of luxury, while the latter two have a rougher go at it. But whaddya know? They all end up in the same place, at a double wedding.
