- On the third day of their wanderings behind enemy lines, someone shoots at the four guys.
- Three of them manage to duck into a ditch for cover, but Billy just stands there like an idiot. He seems to think it's the rules of fair play that he should give the marksman another chance.
- Roland Weary, the antitank gunner, yells at Billy to get out of the way, "you dumb motherfucker" (2.14.3).
- Billy is so shocked that he gets down off the road.
