Character Analysis
Paul is an old family friend who seems to have been particularly fond of, and friendly with, the narrator's father. He was the one who noticed the father was missing and wrote to the narrator to tell her. He is also a member of the party that comes out to the cabin with the news that the body of the narrator's father has been found.
