Travels with Charley Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary

  • Apparently, people were pretty envious of Steinbeck's ability to just pick up and travel around—including Steinbeck's young neighbor, who begged Steinbeck to take him along. Unfortunately, Steinbeck had to refuse (since he'd be breaking all kinds of truancy laws and all).
  • We hear about how Steinbeck got Rocinante all stocked up and ready to roll.
  • Also, Steinbeck tells us about a hurricane that hit Sag Harbor (where Steinbeck lived with his wife, Elaine) right before he was supposed to leave. Steinbeck's boat, the Fayre Eleyne, almost got creamed by a couple of other boats that weren't properly secured, and Steinbeck had to go out in the hurricane and drive her to a safe location to avoid damage. So, we are getting the sense that he's kind of brave.
  • He made it back home safe and sound after his little adventure.
