Steinbeck is on the road alone with his dog, so the steaminess factor is, you'll be glad to know, extremely low. Aside from lovingly comparing landscapes to dolled-up women, you don't get a lot of sexy angst going on here.
Why the PG-13 then, you ask? Well, despite the complete lack of sexytimes, there's still free and copious use of the N-word in the final pages of the novel, which is pretty serious business. So, in the interest of giving you fair warning of the kind of content you'll be wrestling with, we've bumped it up to PG-13.
