Mooresville High School Test Scores Increase With More Data-Driven Instruction Including Shmoop's Test Prep and Analytics

Mooresville High's students, teachers, and instructional technology facilitator attribute much of the school's standardized testing success to Shmoop.

As funding and reputation rely more and more on standardized test scores, it's becoming increasingly important for schools to have access to an affordable and trustworthy test prep resource. Mooresville High School in North Carolina chose Shmoop (www.shmoop.com), a digital publisher known for its award-winning test prep and certified online courses, and it paid off.

Mooresville High started using Shmoop as a pilot for their AP® courses. Without a solid resource that students could use for test preparation, they tried out nine of Shmoop's AP Exam Prep guides, ranging from Calculus to French to World History. After a successful trial, during which students raved about the rigor of Shmoop's materials, the school purchased the entire Shmoop package for grades 9-12 and began working with teachers to implement Shmoop into each of their classes.

Initially, students just used Shmoop as part of assignments from their teachers. But as they became more familiar with the tool and how many other resources were available to them—think: ACT® exam prep, SAT® exam prep, and hundreds of other test prep guides—the school saw massive amounts of at-home use. That's right: students were doing test prep by choice. And teachers were just as happy. They reveled in the variety of materials and the utility of other Shmoop tools like Math Shack and Essay Lab, all of which are student-friendly. Which, of course, makes them teacher friendly, too.

Between September and May 2015, Mooresville High had over 600 students and 20 teachers using Shmoop; combined, students completed thousands of drills and nearly as many practice exams. The best part? It paid off. Due to more data driven instruction—aided by Shmoop's analytics feature—and several other factors, Mooresville High School increased scores across the boards.

"Shmoop is a fantastic product that is both rigorous and entertaining for students, which are not two words often used together to describe a student learning tool," says April Davala, Instructional Technology Facilitator at Mooresville High. "As an instructional coach, I was very pleased with our first year's data."
