Thomas More College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Do you like employment? Me too—and my students do really well when it comes to getting jobs after graduation. It's because of all the experiential learning they get here. Turns out employers love experience. Shocking.

  • Financial aid. I get it: college is expensive, and I'm not exactly a cheap date. So I pile on the financial aid, including loads of scholarships. In other words, don't panic when you see my price tag—we can probably work something out.

  • Clubbing. No, not in the clubs; I mean in an extracurricular sense. With over thirty clubs and organizations, students really have their pick of the litter.

  • Women's basketball. My lady hoopsters brought home the National Championship in 2015. Boom.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A big backpack. Really, a purse or a tiny knapsack won't cut it—I like books a lot.

  2. A planner. There's so much stuff going on here on my campus, you're going to need a mode of organization for it all. Either that or FOMO will keep you up at night.

  3. Personality. There are some real characters on my campus, and in general, I celebrate individuality. So boldly be yourself.

  4. An appreciation for stories. My professors are always telling stories about their lives, families, and pretty much anything else that pops into their brains. It's just a thing here.

  5. An open mind. Some of us are pro-life, some are pro-choice; some of us are conservative, some are more liberal. We're all about that peaceful coexistence.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • I have strong Catholic connections.

  • One hundred percent of my full-time undergrad students receive financial aid. Whoa.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Eating. No really—if you have access to a car and five minutes to spare, you can be at Crestview Hills mall chowing down at one of nearly twenty restaurants in no time. If you can handle sitting in the car for five minutes longer, you'll be in Cincinnati, Ohio, taking in the big city. Here you can see the beautiful Fountain Square, go on a riverboat cruise, or head over to King's Island and ride the Firehawk...if you dare.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • There's this magical place all my students call Couch Land. Couch Land solves any problem a student may have. Tired? Couch Land. Hungry? Couch Land has vending machine munchies. Forgot why you decided to do the whole college thing? Couch Land...can at least provide you with some comfort during your time of confusion.

  • The Saint's Center has a computer center, a café, and a pool table. Enough said.

  • Fountain Square in Cincinnati has something for everyone. Consider it your one-stop shop for coffee, concerts, and so much more.

Quirks:

  • There are three things I really want students to contemplate: the meaning of life, their place in the world, and their responsibility to others. To make sure they spend some quality time thinking about these things, students give speeches at the end of their senior year on these three topics.

  • I'm so small that all classes are located in one building. It literally takes students just one day to remember where their classes are.

  • Because I'm a Catholic college, expect to have to take Theology. It's a part of my core curriculum if you want to graduate.

Famous Alumni:

  • David Justice, former player for the Atlanta Braves and former husband of Halle Barry

  • Rick Hughes, former professional basketball player with the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks

  • Larry Staverman, former professional basketball player and the first coach of the Indiana Pacers

  • Brian Linder, Republican member of the Kentucky House of Representatives

  • Roxanne Qualls, former democratic mayor of Cincinnati
