dec 04 Learn More The "Million Dollar Quartet" Convenes in Memphis


On this day in 1956, the "Million Dollar Quartet" convened in Memphis. That was the nickname given to the impromptu jam session at Sun Records between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Perkins and a then-unknown Lewis were in the studio to cut some new tunes when Presley, and later Cash—or Cash, and later Presley, if you believe Cash's autobiography—dropped by. Sound engineer Jack Clement thought he'd be a moron not to hit record. Good call, Jack. The session was released as an album, to great acclaim, and later the whole shebang was turned into a Broadway musical.
