Emily Brontë was born on this day in 1818. Sure, we think of her one and only novel, Wuthering Heights, as a classic (and tragic) love story these days, but back when it was published, under the pen name Ellis Bell, the reviews were mixed. Some were downright cruel: "How a human being could have attempted such a book as the present without committing suicide before he had finished a dozen chapters, is a mystery," groused Graham's Lady Magazine. "It is a compound of vulgar depravity and unnatural horrors" (source). Um, yeah… but did you like it?
