The Battle of Antietam, which was fought on this day in 1862, is the bloodiest single-day skirmish in American history. More than 10,000 men were wounded just on the Union side. Enter: Potomac Army medical director Jonathan Letterman and his ambulances. Letterman's efficient fleet was basically the model for how our ambulance and emergency room system works today, ferrying injured men and medical supplies to and from the battlefield. Granted, today's ambulances have significantly better shocks.
