University of North Carolina--Asheville

About Me

Intro

You may not have noticed me before, as I have my own little corner of North Carolina pretty much all to myself. Trust me, though. I've got a lot going on.

My peers throughout the state sometimes refer to me as their totally crunchy, tie-dye-wearing hippie friend (and let's be honest, they're pretty much right), but once you get past the hackey sacks, granola, and bare feet, you'll find I'm just as smart as I am mellow. I've got excellent literature and music departments that feature world-class poets and playwrights, and even an electronic music program designed by none other than Robert Moog himself..

Plus, if you consider yourself the outdoorsy type, I'm located in the second-oldest mountain range in the world, with tons of hiking and camping destinations just a stone's throw from my hilltop campus. I'm totally laid back, but determined to provide you with a top-notch education.

Hometown

Imagine a little metropolis nestled between gorgeous mountain ranges, replete with award-winning breweries, dozens of delicious restaurants, and diverse music and arts scenes, not to mention being positively drenched in good vibes. Sounds like a little slice of heaven, right? It's not too good to be true; it's just Asheville, North Carolina.

Birthdate

1927

Body Type

Small but strong. I'm like that quiet kid who reads all the time during lunch but can run faster and longer than anyone you've ever seen. Plus, it's super hilly up here, so I've got really nice legs.

But seriously, folks: I am really small. I've got close to 3,800 pupils, only about fifty of whom are graduate students.

If you like small classes and lots of personal attention, I'm the place for you. With such a cozy atmosphere, most students find it easy to do really well. Let's get snuggly.

Current Living Situation

Like most universities, you pretty much have to live on campus during your first year. But fear not, because on-campus life is awesome. There's a ton of dormitory variety to choose from: single, double, suite style, tall and bright, small and woodsy, etc.

After freshman year, however, most students move off campus into the beautiful surrounding neighborhoods.

Nearby Montford—a historic neighborhood full of beautiful homes—has a huge park, a handful of small eateries, and tree-lined streets. Even closer is North Asheville, which features lots of smaller homes nestled on the sides of actual mountains. Both neighborhoods are very close to Asheville's vibrant downtown, host to a myriad of restaurants, bars, and art galleries.

Some students prefer West Asheville, which has a more funky, bohemian vibe with its hip cafes and music venues, not to mention the famous and most excellent Harvest Records.

Relationship Status

Honestly, I don't have any serious rivals. My track and baseball teams are usually pretty stellar, but I just like to have fun and keep the vibes totally positive.

Politics

Super liberal. My students care deeply about the environment and they promote cultural awareness and LGBTQ issues. If your values are more conservative, no one will make fun of you, but you probably won't find many people with common interests.

You should apply to me if...

you love the outdoors, consider yourself a free spirit, and really enjoy expanding your mind.
