Common Core Standards

Grade 3

Reading RL.3.3

Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

After learning this standard, students should be able to see that characters in stories are just like real people: they think like real people, they act like real people, and they feel like real people. They should also know that stories created by the actions of characters—rarely are stories a series of things that happen to a non-responsive character.
