Common Core Standards

Grade 3

Reading RL.3.7

Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting).

In previous grades, students have been working with illustrations at face-value and simply assuming that that's the way they are and were supposed to be. However, with this Common Core Standard, students now have to go into the minds of illustrators and ask why an illustration was drawn in a certain way or, in other words, what an illustration means.
