Common Core Standards

Grade 3

Reading RL.3.5

Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections.

Many texts are subdivided into smaller sections—you won't ever see a 500-word novel with zero chapter breaks. The purpose of this Common Core Standard is to get students to start using the terminology associated with texts; by the end of the year, instead of saying "the part where Bob eats dirt", they hopefully will be saying "the chapter where Bob eats dirt".
